Summary Report for the Eric Wolfe Professorship

The Eric Wolfe Professorship was awarded in 2008, and this report summarizes the 2008 activities conducted under the broad umbrella of neuro-oncology research by Professor Minesh Mehta during 2008.  The Professorship allowed Dr. Mehta to dedicate additional time to neuro-oncology, and therefore was very useful in promoting the activities listed below....

What's it all about?

Eric Wolfe was 23 years old, he loved golf, racquetball, photography, his work and his family and friends.  He was a very energetic, creative young man who had a great sense of humor.  And, he was a second year grad student at UW Madison majoring in Graphic Design when he was diagnosed with Brain Cancer.

The radiation and the chemotherapy treatments were demanding while maintaining his graduate school schedule therefore he had to make the difficult decision to put school on hold.  Eric was later able to work as a graphic designer and free-lance artist – a field he was passionate about.

Dr. Mehta, at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center, was his primary physician for his radiation and chemotherapy treatments.  Eric’s early prognosis was 3-5 years.  We had always hoped that a new and more effective treatment would become available to extend his life.  Progress was made, but not fast enough. While Dr. Mehta’s clinical trials made it possible for Eric to survive almost 5 years, Eric died in October 1996 at the age of 28.

Our friends suggested that we do something special that would help continue the medical advancements and at the same time keep Eric’s memory alive.  This is how Golf Fore Wolfe & A Cure (GFW) began.  We have devoted the past eight years to raising money so brain tumor patients will have a better chance to extend their life.  Eric received his treatment at the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center and therefore we have designated this great clinical and research facility as the recipient of our efforts.

There are two major goals with this charitable event:

- To raise money for brain cancer research in the form of the “Eric Wolfe Brain Tumor Professorship”.  It takes $500,000 to start the professorship.

- To keep Eric’s memory alive through a one day event of golf, telling stories and having fun with friends and family.

We hope you will share our passion to raise money for Brain Cancer Research.  We would like to make a difference and increase the number of survivors.  Please send contributions to:

Thank you for your support and for keeping Eric’s memory alive!

Sponsorship Opportunities:

It does not seem possible but it will be our Tenth Annual event for Brain Cancer Research and Education!

Our goal is to raise 10 times the amount of money we raised in 1999, or put it another way - $90,000.  In order to accomplish this aggressive goal, we are once again calling upon our loyal friends and followers to contribute to this worthy cause.

Progress is being made to help those affected with Brain Cancer in the area of tomotherapy (radiation) and chemotherapy.  The UW Paul Carbone Cancer Center is a leading research facility in the Midwest.  This is where all the money is directed from our fund raising event.

Our mission is to help ensure a long and quality filled life for Brain Cancer survivors.  You can help us accomplish this mission with your generous support.
